Fall Internships Available!

Want to help create solutions to poverty and grow public awareness about the need for sustainable community programs?  Increase your community’s recycling and reuse efforts?  Learn how a nonprofit operates?  Gain experience in the fields of fundraising, marketing, and communications?  Goodwill Industries of the Greater East Bay has some opportunities for energetic college and graduate school students seeking to increase their skills and give back to their community.

Goodwill is seeking interns in fundraising & special events, marketing & graphic arts, and public policy for the Fall 2008 semesters.  Interns will have the opportunity to gain experience and work with an established and respected nonprofit that has been working in the community for nearly 90 years.  Goodwill provides workforce development services to people facing barriers, such as lack of education, multi-generational poverty, a history of incarceration, and disabilities, in Alameda, Contra Costa, and Solano Counties.  We also work aggressively to divert waste from landfill and protect the environmental health of our communities through our extensive reuse and recycling program.

Communications Internship
Goodwill is seeking an intern interested in developing tools to enhance internal and external communications.  Specific responsibilities include updating and recommending content for the agency’s website, developing internet and technology tools, drafting press releases and pitching stories to local media, and planning community outreach events.  We are seeking an intern with excellent communication skills with strong writing and/or graphic design background, as well as the ability to work with the public and senior staff.  Project management and strong organizational skills are also required.  Specific projects include an upcoming role in helping communicate the Goodwill national “Green Movement” to our local community.

Fundraising Internship
Goodwill is seeking an intern with an interest in gaining experience in the area of fundraising and special events planning.  Specific responsibilities include researching major donor, foundation, and corporate funding opportunities, analyzing direct mail needs, drafting grant proposals, managing a donor and prospect database, and helping plan special events.  Applicants should have excellent writing computer skills, including Internet research.  Previous proposal writing desired but not mandatory.  Specific upcoming projects include establishing a new major donor program and planning an annual fundraising event.

Public Policy Internship
Policy priorities of Goodwill include issues affecting workforce development, low-income individuals and those living with disabilities, and the environment and recycling/reuse.  Goodwill is seeking an individual who is aware of public policy issues on state and local levels and has strong communication and advocacy skills.  Strong writing, presentation, and computer skills are needed.  Duties including monitoring and tracking local and state initiatives, drafting policy position letters and papers, identifying potential collaborations, helping plan public education events, and drafting recommendations for advocacy.  Potential projects for the next legislative session including working on bills to help support nonprofit viability in California.

Internships are non-compensated, part-time positions for college students, graduate students, or recent graduates.  Internships are flexible, with anticipated hours between 8 and 16 hours per week at the Goodwill headquarters in the Fruitvale district of Oakland (near Fruitvale BART).  Academic credit may be available.  If you have any questions or would like a full description for one of our internship positions, please contact Kimberly Scrafano at kscrafano@eastbaygoodwill.org.  For consideration, please submit resume and two appropriate writing samples:
